Read Write Inc (RWI)

is a programme to get children off to a flying start with their English. RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • learn that sounds are represented by written letters

  • learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts

  • learn how to blend sounds

  • learn to read words using Fred Talk

  • read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out

  • show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions

When using RWI to write the children will:

  • learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent 44 sounds

  • learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk

  • write simple sentences

Bug Club

is a reading program to help develop confident and motivated readers. Books are interactive, have audio and feature comprehension activities.

  • An enormous range of fiction, non‑fiction and poetry, offering variety to keep children engaged and develop a love of reading.

  • Features well‑known characters from film and television.

  • Finely levelled to give your children manageable steps in reading progression and a real sense of ongoing achievement as they move through the levels.

Writing in KS1 AND kS2 - Pathways to write

Pathways to Write

At Canon Popham, we follow a whole-school mastery approach to writing through the programme Pathways to Write. Pathways to Write is a text-based approach to the writing curriculum which uses high-quality, engaging texts as a stimulus for writing. Writing tasks for our children are meaningful: there is an integrated approach to writing that allows for the application of EGPS through purposeful writing tasks. There is also a high emphasis on development of vocabulary and spoken language which will equip our children with the necessary skills for later life and learning.

The process towards mastery is built up over three stages: gateway, pathway and writeaway skills. This culminates in an extended piece of writing for each unit. As part of the writing sequence, children also have frequent opportunities to edit their writing and to apply their handwriting skills.

Further details about the Pathways to write scheme can be found in documents at the top of this page.

Handwriting

Pupils first learn to form letters as part of their phonics learning during their Read Write Inc lessons and go on to learn how to implement a range of joins through discreet practise using the Martin Harvey Scheme which enables pupils to develop a clear, simple, semi-curseive style. Following a routine of 3 x weekly sessions, pupils quickly learn how to form and join letters in the correct size.
