Statement of Intent for Geography
At Canon Popham C of E Primary Academy our Geography curriculum is designed to fulfil the National Curriculum requirements through a broad and balanced approach ensuring both progression of Geographical disciplinary and substantive knowledge as well as providing pupils with memorable experiences. As a Church of England school our strong Christian values also thread through our Geography curriculum.
Intent
Our Geography curriculum is presented through a combination of disciplinary and substantive knowledge and provides children with rich, diverse learning opportunities. Through high quality teaching we foster a curiosity in pupils about the world in which we live and the diversity of it’s people. Pupils are equipped with the knowledge of places and people, resources in the environment and human and physical geographical processes. Key Geographical disciplinary knowledge, such as collecting and analysing geographical data, interpreting a range of resources, including maps, globes and aerial photographs, as well as the ability to communicate geographical information, are also taught.
Implementation
At Canon Popham C of E Primary Academy Geography is taught as part of Understanding the World in EYFS and as a discrete subject in Key Stages 1 and 2. In Key Stages 1 and 2 geography is taught weekly every other half term, alternating with history. Units are year group specific ensuring pupils have a strong grasp of key geographical disciplinary and substantive knowledge. Our geography curriculum covers all the components of the National Curriculum Programme of Study. The geography curriculum is spiral and is designed to progressively develop children’s understanding of key geographical skills. We also place an importance on the development of children’s geographical vocabulary ensuring children are able to confidently articulate their learning and understanding, of key geographical concepts. Within our Geography lessons we use high-quality questioning, sentence stems and retrieval activities. Pupils present their geographical substantive knowledge and apply their disciplinary knowledge in a range of different ways. We use the Developing Experts Geography scheme to support our geography curriculum.
Impact
The impact and measure of the Geography curriculum at Canon Popham C of E Primary Academy is to ensure that our pupils are equipped with relevant geographical substantive and disciplinary knowledge necessary to prepare them for the next stage in their academic development and to engage fully and effectively in society.
Local Area Fieldwork
At Canon Popham C of E Primary Academy we particularly value the exploration of our local area. Our geography curriculum aims to instil in our students a love and respect for there local area. This helps children to develop their sense of belonging and responsibility for the locality. To do this, we take a more practical approach and local fieldwork is studied in detail during our yearly local fieldwork week. We recognise the importance of providing children with first hand experiences and opportunities to apply their geographical skills practically
